Using finished compost to nourish your soil

By the end of a successful growing season your veggie garden is a mess and in need of a clean out.

That’s the perfect time to add back the nutrients that were taken out and taking the time to do this while it’s cold makes it so much easier to start growing again in the following spring.

Step 1: Remove all dead plant material as well as any rotten fruit or vegetables. This can be added to your own compost pile for next year!

Step 2: Push any mulch to one side and pull up remaining weeds

Step 3: Add a 50mm layer of high quality finished compost. Don’t know where to get some?

Step 4: Cover the beds with a very light layer of the old mulch to help suppress weeds and protect the soil

Step 5: Plant some winter veggies! If you’re stuck for ideas on what to plant, check out Gardening Australia’s guide on the App Store.
