Meet Gary Sheppard – Head operator and maintenance engineer at Geelong Compost

Patrick BlampiedNews

Making compost takes some serious equipment and regular maintenance. We’re lucky enough to have Gary on board. He’s and experienced engineer with many years in the field operating and maintaining a fleet of machinery.

When he’s not checking or repairing equipment you might spot him keeping the compost rows under control, moving from farm to farm on the tractor, turner and loader.

What are your hobbies when you’re not at work
I’ve got a hobby farm outside of Winch where I raise cows and calves. We’ve been breeding them for about 15 years. Also enjoy 4 wheel driving, camping and taking the new boat out to do some fishing.

Previous job
I was with Southern Farming Systems as a technical officer for 16 years. Ran their fleet of machinery and also did operational work much like I do with Geelong Compost. Did a lot of ground prep, sowing, etc for wheat, barley, canola.

Thoughts on compost
I reckon it’s a good product. I’ve enjoyed getting away from using chemicals every day and it’s nice to be doing something that is using inputs that would otherwise go to waste. I’ve spread some at my place too, looking forward to seeing the results.
